Fitch-rated Brazilian power projects have seen varying curtailment levels, with wind generation more affected than solar. Some projects in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte experienced curtailments of up to 30% of annual generation, while curtailment for other projects was only 2%.
Following a wind and solar power boom over the past decade, Brazil’s green energy build-out has hit an obstacle as the network of cables that transport electricity fails to keep pace.
Between January and October, wind and solar generators in Brazil had their production reduced by 20.4 per cent, according to consultancy Volt Robotics. That was more than three times higher than the same period last year. Financial losses resulting from these enforced power wastages have exceeded R$6bn ($1.1bn) since 2024, according to Aurora.
Some projects in the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte experienced curtailments of up to 30% of annual generation, while curtailment for other projects was only 2%. Projects in the south and in the southeast regions also saw larger curtailment.
