The 5G network is more technologically advanced and implementation has begun throughout the world and here in Aotearoa New Zealand. All cellular networks use radio waves to transmit data. Like light, radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation. Radio waves have been used in NZ for radio since the 1920s and cell phones since the 1980s.
Across NZ in February, we upgraded or built a total of 16 sites throughout the motu, with 12 of those providing new 5G coverage to areas and a further 4 providing capacity improvement. The Waikato has 4 new sites, with 5G coverage now provided in Gordonton, Taupiri, Ngaruawahia, and Chartwell Square.
The details of this agreement include: New Zealand’s 3 mobile network operators (MNOs) each receiving 80 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band. This is sufficient radio spectrum for all three MNOs to operate nation-wide 5G networks.
The frequency 5G will use in NZ will initially be 3.5 GHz. This is similar to frequencies used for 2G, 3G and 4G. The frequencies for each radio type must be different to each other to prevent reception issues. In the future, a higher frequency (26 GHz) may be used. This higher wave type is known as millimetre waves.
