Electricity storage is crucial for power systems to achieve higher levels of renewable energy penetration. This is especially significant for non-interconnected island (NII) systems, which are electrically isolated and vulnerable to the fluctuations of intermittent renewable generation.
Centrally managed storage facilities in island power systems dominate the relevant literature. Table 4 includes the papers dealing with the centrally managed storage concept. Table S2 of the Supplementary data and Fig. 7 present additional details for the most representative ones.
Storage services and architectures in islands are identified. Two storage designs emerge as of particular interest. Storage operating principles, remuneration schemes, and investments feasibility are discussed. In , the hybridization of wind generation with the introduction of pumped hydro storage systems is investigated. The findings indicate that these integrated storage and RES facilities have the potential to facilitate increased renewable penetration levels in islands without compromising system stability.
