The Current State of Wind Energy in Bulgaria: By the end of 2023, Bulgaria’s installed wind capacity reached 705 MW, accounting for 3.9% of the nation’s annual gross electricity generation. Wind farms in Bulgaria generated 1,584 GWh in 2023, marking a 5.9% year-on-year increase.
These targets also fall short of Bulgaria’s vast offshore wind potential. The most promising area of Bulgaria’s maritime exclusive economic zone (EEZ), next to the border with Romania, has a technical potential of 4.3-5 GW, with capacity factors ranging from 45 to 48 percent and a levelized cost of electricity between EUR 62-90/MWh.
At the end of 2024, Bulgaria’s cumulative installed wind power capacity reached 714 MW (0.71 GW), which represents 15.1 % of the total installed renewable energy capacity in the country. The report provides a complete picture of the market situation, dynamics, current issues and future prospects.
The government plans to add 0.6 GW of onshore wind and 0.5 GW offshore wind by 2030 in the draft Strategy for Sustainable Development, but these goals remain very conservative and would leave Bulgaria far behind the rest of Europe. These targets also fall short of Bulgaria’s vast offshore wind potential.
