Image credit: City of Cape Town The City of Cape Town is making progress with its R200 million solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Atlantis, having installed around 2 400 solar panels of the total planned 12 850 to power the local grid by the end of this year.
The City of Cape Town has launched construction of a 7-10 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Atlantis, in the Western Cape Province. To be developed at a cost of approximately $11.3 million, construction is expected to be completed within a year.
By Joanne Carew, ITWeb Cape-based contributor. Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. The City of Cape Town’s municipal solar plant in Atlantis, Cape Town, is now one-sixth complete. The facility is the first utility-scale renewable energy project in Cape Town and the first-of-its-kind in South Africa to be owned and operated by a city.
It is a 216 MW solar plant with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) built in Northern Cape Town Province. After its commercial operation, this solar power plant in South Africa will supply dispatchable electricity to the South African National Grid under a 20-year PPA, which is equivalent to 400 GWh per year.
Our photovoltaic container solutions including 20ft/40ft containers, custom mobile containers, commercial and industrial energy storage systems are engineered for reliability, safety, and efficient deployment. All systems include comprehensive monitoring and control systems with remote management capabilities.
