While solar PV with battery is found to be the least cost hybrid power supply options for the telecom towers located in areas with continuous grid power unavailability up to 4 h, a diesel generator also needs to be included for larger hours of continuous grid unavailability.
For all the cases of a grid power outage, using solar PV-based hybrid systems are cheaper as compared to conventional power supply options for all the locations consid-ered in the study. Dependence on DG set can be avoided entirely with the help of solar PV based hybrid systems for up to 4 h of continuous grid power outage.
Moreover, there is growing pressure on telecom tower compa-nies to incorporate renewable technologies into their power supply system. In view of these conditions, the present study has envisaged assessing the financial feasibility of sustain-able hybrid systems as compared to conventional systems.
The solar PV system will be able to meet the electricity demand of telecom tower during grid power outages due to good solar radiation. If any excess electricity is generated by solar PV, that will be used to charge the battery. Upon full charging of the battery, remaining electricity will be exported to the grid through net metering.
